A Day in the Life…
by Haus of BlaylockHey everyone! So, I’m currently working on a modern ranch. For this project, my clients really want some major drama flair to their new home. So, we’re going to be adding a lot of blacks, grays, and whites!! When coming up with any design, I want my clients to walk into each room and have something that really jumps out at them. Something that offers a powerful impact, whether it be a featured wall or featured areas. However, there still has to be a balance and flow to the entire home, so you have to pick and choose those spots accordingly.
Where do I even start?
I’m glad you asked! We already know the color scheme of the room will follow along the lines of grey, black, and white! Let’s start with the countertops! Countertops are very important because they have the ability to give an entire room it’s personality. Or at least, it can be the grounding factor that flows and compliments another feature of the room.
For this particular project, my clients and I began by looking at granite countertops and they absolutely fell in love with the stone, ‘Sky Fall’. The tile has these big waves of grey, silver, and white, falling into our color palette perfectly! I also knew they had their eyes set out for something grey and made of porcelain wood. Now, you have to be careful when choosing the shades of each color of the tile. By choosing a lighter shade of this particular tile would make the room feel more like a Rustic Farmhouse. With that being said, I selected a grey porcelain tiling that had a bit more movement in it and was a dark enough shade that really created a powerful mood. Now let’s review. So far I’ve picked a stone countertop and flooring tile that are both busy and offer a lot of movement! Perfect!
I know what some of you are thinking, “But Brenda, how are you going to balance the tiling out?” I’m getting to that. This room will be a very big room, with a lot of space and tall ceilings. And not only do the countertops and flooring cancel each other out, I’ll be able to place rugs and furniture in certain areas that I need! Specifically where the featured wall will be!
Moving onto backsplash!
A lot of the time you’ll use one stone for countertops and another tile backsplash. But the Sky Fallll tile is too good for that! Sure, I could pick a backsplash that’s solid and simple, but nope sorry, Sky Full is too cool to not use it as a backsplash too!
Luckily, my vendor has multiple slabs of this particular granite! This will allow me to mirror it! By having enough of a particular tile, I’ll be able to create a backsplash that meets in the middle with the countertops, creating something spectacular and extremely powerful!
Last but not least, the cabinets!
What color cabinets will I choose? Another great question! When choosing a paint color for your cabinets, you have to think in terms of placement. We’ve just picked textiles for the flooring, countertops, and backsplash i.e., the bottom and middle of the room. By choosing a cabinet color, we’re looking for a color that’ll bring balance and simplicity between the flooring and countertops/backsplash. To keep the color dramatic I can either go with a dark grey or white. Here’s my trick: I’m going to pick a shade of grey out of the countertop and make that the color of the cabinets AND the color of the feature wall. The solid color will bring that simplicity, but it’ll still be in the same range of colors that are already being used so it’ll maintain that dramatic tone I’m looking for.
