Selecting the Right Art for Your Home
by Haus of BlaylockHow to Choose the Right Art for Your Space
Hey everyone! I hope you’ve been having an artistic filled week! If you live in the Fort Worth area, you know that unfortunately the Main St. Arts Festival has been postponed for September. Luckily, they held a virtual online festival last week, which inspired my artistic side of interior design! Not to mention, just last night the Metropolitan Museum of Art held an At-Home Gala showcasing the Metropolitan Opera! So, I thought it would be the perfect time to discuss the different styles of art and how you can go about finding the perfect piece of artwork to place in your home!
Styles
Now, there are a lot of different artistic styles, each inspired by a specific art movement. These artistic movements are Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, followed by Fauvism, Modern Art, which included Expressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Art, and finally, Contemporary and Postmodern Art. Realism is shown by the representation of truth in the subject matter, avoiding any implausible elements. Impressionism is the artist’s use of lighting perspective, attempting to capture light as seen from the human eye. This was then followed by Post-Impression, with the continued use of vivid colors, thick application of paint, and real-life subject matter. However, artists were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, distorted forms for expressive effect, and use unnatural or arbitrary color.
Fauvism came next and is considered the first “modern” genre of art. By rethinking color, Fauvism artists paint their canvases in bright, wild hues. Modern Art pushed the limits of traditional notions of “art” and corresponded to the similar rapid changes that were taking place throughout the world, primarily focusing on those activities and values. Expressionism concerned with evoking emotion through objective works of art. Cubism is the art of transposing a four-dimensional reality onto a flat canvas. Abstract art uses shape, form, color, and line to create a composition independent from visual references in the world.
Contemporary and Postmodern Art sees the blurring between the high and fine arts with low-end and commercial art. Postmodernism uses the whole range of previous movements as a reference point. Meanwhile, Contemporary art lacks a single objective and is more of a reflection of the world today. This leads people to feel as though it’s contradictory, confusing, and open-ended.
How to Choose
As a painter carefully selects the right brush and colors to create a work of art, I carefully select the right furniture and accent pieces when designing a home. Interior Design and Painting can both be based on different art movements, and thus parallel with one another. For example, for those of you with a Colonial Styled home, a painting showcasing realism or impressionism would be the right fit for you!
Overall, art is very personal. I take the time to get to know my clients, their style, and the vision they have for their home. At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong when it comes to art, all that matters is how it makes you feel.
I love selecting out art pieces for my clients and seeing their faces as they see the piece tie the entire room together! If you ever need any tips, don’t hesitate to contact me, I’d love to help!
