Residential Style 101: Colonial
by Haus of BlaylockFrench + Greek Architecture = Historical Elegance
Happy Sunday everyone! If you follow me on social media, you already know that I’ve been posting a lot of historical styles recently! And that’s exactly what I’d like to discuss with you in this week’s blog! Today, I’m going over one of my most beautiful design transformations and how I went about turning this home into what it is today!
During one of the first meetings I had with the owner, we went over different types of design styles for residential homes and how they had chosen to transform their home into something that was rooted in southern colonial history, the of type design and detail you’d see in something like an old southern plantation.
To make sure I stayed true to this era-inspired design, I had a lot of research ahead of me. What I found most interesting about the Antebellum style is that it’s actually derived from French and Greek architectural design. For those of you that don’t know, French colonial design became very popular during the country’s colonial settlement in Louisiana, spreading throughout the rest of the south becoming a very popular trend. From the exterior of the house, you can see the French-inspired architectural design through the use of a larger porch and the details that went into creating the arched framed windows.
Greek architectural design became very popular during this era. Architects realized that North America never had the chance to indulged in the legendary design styles of the Greeks and many American architects wanted to pay homage to them for this reason, seeing as they had just gained their own independence from Great Britain the century before. You can see this homage in the giant columns and pillars used in Antebellum homes.
