Coastal Style Design

Making selections for your home can be challenging. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. In today’s blog post, I’ll be giving you my tips and tricks to make your home a coastal contemporary oasis by using a mix of different colors, patterns, motifs, fabrics, tiles, and furniture that reflect the coastal style.
Colors
The ocean and beach are very calming places, so the goal is to select bright yet muted colors that reflect the amazing ocean and beach landscape. The first color that comes to mind is blue, for the sky and ocean. The second is ivory for the sand. The third is green, the beautiful palm trees and other gorgeous greenery. Some other fun colors to incorporate are yellow and pink. They’re reminiscent of the citrus fruits that grow in tropical climates and the beautiful sunsets you’re only able to view from the coast. Farrow and Ball offer a great collection that incorporates many of these colors.
Patterns and Motifs
When selecting fabrics, wallpaper, or artwork in general, it’s a good idea to stick with the colors we discussed above while also looking for particular patterns and motifs that match the coastal style. The wavy lines look like coral, fish, aquatic animals, leaves, florals, and other botanicals that match the landscape, for example, palm trees and palm leaves—sea shells, nautical ropes, waves, stripes, scallops, and woven materials.
Fabrics and Materials
If you’re designing or decorating a coastal home, the materials you use are also critical. Not just for aesthetics but for functional purposes as well. Due to the climate, linen, and performance fabrics are about to become your new best friend. Linen due to it being lightweight and performance fabric because it can be used as both indoor and outdoor fabric. Pierre Frey offers excellent linens, while Kravet, Schumacher, and Fabricut offer a wide selection of fabrics, wallcoverings, and trim/tape that will match your color palette while incorporating those patterns/motifs we discussed in the previous paragraph.
Tile and Stone
Once you’ve selected your favorite fabrics you’d like to work with, it’s time for tile selections. My top picks for tile are anything glass, glazed, or pearlescent. Now you don’t have to stick to only those strictly. For example, if you find a beautiful marble in a fun pattern that reminds you of the coast, go for it! The most important thing is to have fun, get those creative juices flowing, and see what you come up with.
Furniture
Coastal homes often have that minimal vibe with a little bit of light rustic thrown in. When shopping for furniture, look for items that have light-weathered wood. You can never go wrong with furniture pieces that are rattan, cane, or bamboo. And if it uses woven ropes in the design, even better! My favorite furniture brands that are perfect for coastal homes are Palacek, Brown Jordan, and Essentials for Living.
