5 Tips on Creating a Fabulously French Design
by Haus of BlaylockI hope everyone had a fabulous week to go along with this fabulous blog topic! If you know me, you know that I am OBSESSED with Parisian style. There’s just something so unique about this type of design style, and I wanted to go further in-depth about it. So today, I’m going to be sharing some tips I’ve picked up over the years that will help you transform any space into something with a little bit of that French flair!
1. Color
Color is one of the most significant elements because it is the foundation of your entire design! Personally, I believe French design hit its peak during the 18th-19th century. During this time, you’ll see a lot of contrast between the colors that were used in the design. However, as we’ve entered into the new Millenium, color palettes have begun to be more subtle, and less over the top.
2. Symmetry
Symmetry is another key element in any French design, especially in architecture. Just take a look at Versailles. Every stone, every column, is a complete parallel with it’s correlating side. Take a look at the photo at the top of the page. When I first came across this pair of wall decor, I immediately fell in love. They exemplify French design so perfectly. By placing them side by side, I was able to add that symmetrical element, something you wouldn’t have been able to see if I had placed in separate spots.
3. Detail
Color palettes today are far less subtle when compared to color palettes used centuries ago. Meaning, we need to make up that difference in the details, especially in French design. A perfect example of this can be found in moldings. Take a look at this photo, the walls, ceilings, and moldings are all white. From far away you may not even notice the detail, creating that clean and modern look. It’s not until you get up close that you’re able to see just how much detail went into creating something so beautiful.
4. Mirrors
Ever heard of the infamous Hall of Mirrors in Versailles? Mirrors are a great way to brighten any room with natural light, creating a more heavenly space. Mirrored furniture has been increasingly popular over the years. It’s such a creative way to use mirrors in such a subtle way and will allow so much more light back into the room. I personally love mirrored furniture that uses an antique pattern. It’s a great way to combine modern and antique styles in such a chic way.
5. BAROQUE, BAROQUE, BAROQUE
Can a design even be considered French if it doesn’t include Baroque? Baroque is a design in itself and was first seen throughout Italy before becoming popular in France. Baroque is a very detailed and complex design that can be seen in every aspect of design whether it be art, architectural, or interior. The design can be seen throughout the photos in this blog and I love getting the chance to incorporate this design whenever I get the chance! Stay tuned and maybe I’ll go into more detail about this incredible design style😉
